1st Place Bathroom

"Romantic Reminiscence," the winning
bathroom design by J. Robert Call, was
inspired by the history of the Lambert
name. Lambert has German roots, and
means “land bright.” Call used this in his design to
create the romantic getaway the Lamberts desired.
Open spaces and a circular flow of energy and
traffic help to create a soothing, peaceful retreat.
The circular, custom-built vanity allows for centrally
located storage, easily accessible from all
angles. The vanities were built to accommodate
the difference in Carmen and David’s heights.
The circular shower was patterned using the turrets
of Germany and the Charlottenburg Palace.
A dual showerhead arrangement promotes a
feeling of “grandeur and luxury. ” The sauna is
equipped with Color Light Therapy.
A “three-quarter” broken rock wall that resembles
the Cologne Cathedral gives privacy and architectural
elegance to the toilet area. A moveable
screen was added to give privacy when moving
from one area to another.
Call looked to the future as well when designing
the bathroom. Wheelchair accessibility and a
barrier-free design were implemented to accommodate
guests or any future needs of the clients.
A fake front was put on Carmen’s vanity to allow
a wheelchair to glide underneath. Grab bars were
provided and all the fixtures are lever operated.
For the final touch, the spa/bath position was
carefully planned. Carmen and David use the
area the most between 4 and 7 pm. The spa was
placed where the greatest amount of southwestern
sunlight would be at that time. As the sun sets,
the light peeks through the skylight and illuminates
the room with warm, relaxing rays.
