2nd Place Kitchen

Michelle Wilcher was this year’s 2nd
place Kitchen Design winner. Her
solution for the Lamberts was to
create a family and entertainment
area using the island as the focal point. She used
traditional cabinetry to maintain the 1880’s charm
of the house, but added modern appliances and
countertops for convenience.
The island not only provides the Lamberts with
ample seating, but also a place for cooking, eating
and homework. The seating around the island is
now at a comfortable table height, as Carmen was
tired of sitting at an elevated height. The island
has a warming drawer and a microwave placed
strategically for both adults and children to reach.
The workspace was planned as not to interfere
with the family/entertainment space.
To further maximize space, Michelle bumpedout
the west wall for additional floor space.
Special customized features were added such
as rollout cabinets, a built-in coffee maker and a
television. Additional storage was created with a
tall pantry pullout.
To create more light in the kitchen, Michelle
added a new 42” window near the sliding doors
to the deck. Dimmer switches were also added, as
well as recessed lighting. There is ample lighting
over the island, with additional lighting above and
below the cabinets. The cabinet lighting helps
turn a family kitchen into a festive space. The use
of pale cabinetry also aids in illumination.
Michelle added some finishing touches to contribute
to the warmth of the kitchen. She used
decorative tin for the backsplash and the ceiling.
The cabinetry’s crown molding and built-in look
adds to the charm of the kitchen as well.
